The wushujia devotes most of his training time to the practice of taolu, or routines. In classical wushu, what Lao Xiong calls ''real'' wushu, fighting ability comes as a byproduct of this expertise. His movements become instinctive and express a harmony of mind and body that the Chinese believe is crucial to spiritual as well as physical health. The goal of the wushujia, or wushu expert, is to achieve perfect form and concentration. Wushu, the Chinese word for martial arts, is used to describe various forms of stylized combat developed in China over thousands of years. People are always trying to make wushu into something that it is not. Lao Xiong walked over to the tree to collect his bird, then said, ''All that jumping around -that's not wushu either.

Just then we heard applause behind us and turned to see a crowd cheering on a young man as he performed a series of backflips with a sword in one hand. ''They don't understand wushu at all, then,'' Lao Xiong declared. They go to martial arts schools thinking they will acquire such abilities. Most Westerners who study martial arts are not loudmouths at all, although many have the romantic notion that martial arts experts are superhumanly strong, undefeatable in combat and even capable of wielding mysterious psychic powers. He frowned and said, ''I heard that in foreign countries, only loudmouths practice martial arts.'' One day, Lao Xiong, 83 years old and the senior member of our group, paused after completing a 20-minute taijiquan form, known in the West as tai chi, and asked, ''Is wushu popular in your country?'' I told him that in America wushu is called kung fu and is very popular indeed. We hung the bamboo cages from the branches of low trees and practiced beside them so we could hear the birds as we did our exercises. A group of retired men and women invited me to meet them there once a week to practice wushu, Chinese martial arts, and to listen to their songbirds. EVERY SUNDAY MORN-ing in the spring of 1984 I spent a few hours by the South Gate of the ancient city wall that at one time surrounded Changsha, capital of Hunan Province in south central China.
